President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sent a message of sympathy to the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, following the earthquake in the Emilia Romagna region.
The President’s message to President Napolitano reads as follows.

It was with intense sadness that I learned about the second deadly earthquake which hit the Emilia Romagna region within the space of a fortnight. The rise in the number of dead, the significant damage and the widespread devastation to the infrastructure is of immense grief.
At this time of National distress, the Government and the people of Maldives join me in sending our profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of Italy. I wish the recovery efforts every success and commend the tenacity of the Italian people in the face of such tragedy.
Please convey our sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved families.
