President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that this visit to India had been very productive, and that his first official visit, since assumption of office as the President of Maldives, being to India was symbolic of the very special relationship between the two countries.

The President made this statement while meeting the international media this evening in New Delhi, prior to his departure to Mumbai. The President noted that India was a “special friend who we can depend on in good times bad times a like.”

Highlighting the events of his visit, the President said that the senior leadership of India had assured of their continued support to Maldives. He also expressed his satisfaction that the Indian leadership now fully understood the recent political events in the Maldives.

“I particularly appreciate the government of India’s patience and understanding with our country. I appreciate India’s willingness to continue to support us, both in advice and also in terms of financial assistance. I very appreciate the continuation of cooperation of development projects with the country” said the President.

Noting that during his visit, the President had been exploring possibilities for further private sector investments in Maldives, he said that the government was focusing on further promoting tourism between Maldives and India.

Concluding the press statement, President Waheed expressed his gratitude to the government of India, for the excellent hospitality provided to the President and his delegation.
