President Dr Mohamed Waheed has formed a technical committee to administer the conferring of the Award for Special Achievement, and met with the members today.

The Award for Special Achievement is given, as a special award given by the President, to those who achieve distinction for the country. The award was first given during President Gayoom’s presidency in 1985. The award had been given each year since then, till 2007.

Members of the technical committee are, Dr Hassan Hameed, Dr Abdul Muhsin Mohamed, Dr Ahmed Anwar, Dr Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa, and Ms Aminath Reena.

Meeting the members of the committee, the President said that the resumption of conferring the award would be a way for the government to recognise individuals who achieve distinction for the country.

President Waheed also asked members to revise the existing selection criteria set for conferring the awards, and to make the necessary amendments.

During President Nasheed’s administration, it was decided that the award would be given by the relevant government office. However, at the cabinet meeting held on 24 April, members decided that this could create inconsistencies in the selection criteria for the award, and to form a technical committee to confer the award under the criteria decided by the committee.
