President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the toll on the global environment, from unsustainable policies and actions is very evident, and that the consequences of environmental neglect are at a point that it is not debatable anymore.
The President made this remark while delivering his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the CANSO Asia-Pacific Conference 2012 held this morning at Kurumba Maldives.
In his speech, the President noted that new air traffic management technologies made it possible to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon footprint, and to develope the civil aviation industry’s contribution to a cleaner environment. However, he noted that the will to make a difference was required more than resolving the technological challenges.
Commending CANSO’s commitment to transforming air traffic management for sustainable growth, President Waheed noted that CANSO played a very vital role in the global aviation management. He also said that institutions like CANSO, just like governments, could bring about changes to address environmental damage and neglect, and improve the situation.
Noting that the Maldives has been in the forefront in advocating for responsible global environmental policies since 1989, President Waheed said that his government was committed protecting the environment, and that its aim was to strengthen established institutions and to develop new ones, to reinforce the climate and energy sectors through sound policies and regulations.
