Official talks between the Maldives and Palestine were held this afternoon at the President’s Office. The head of the Maldivian delegation that took part in the official talks was President Dr Mohamed Waheed. The head of the Palestinian delegation was President Dr Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine.

President Waheed noted that this year marked the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The President also expressed his confidence in further strengthening the relations. He gave assurance of the Maldives’ support for a fully independent Palestinian state.

President Waheed briefed President Abbas on the current political situation in the Maldives. He said that, the constitution needed to be amended first if early elections were to be held in the Maldives, despite the political pressure.

President Waheed praised the strategic and long-term steps being taken by President Abbas, in the struggle for full independence for the state of Palestine.

Noting that this visit was a very historic one, the Palestinian President informed on the progress of Palestine’s efforts to establish full independence.

At the official talks, discussions were also held on the different areas where technical cooperation between the two countries could be pursued.
