The cabinet has today decided to allocate 30% of land area for the construction of tourist facilities in islands and land plots leased by the government. The authorisation will be made according to a policy formulated by the government. The decision was made following deliberations on the matter at today’s cabinet meeting.

At the meeting, members noted that opportunities for commercial expansion were limited, due to unavailability of land area to develop tourist facilities on leased-out spaces, as the original 20% land area limit was gradually reached. Members also agreed that, raising the land area limit for construction of tourist facilities, to meet market demand, would largely contribute to the prosperity of the island.

At today’s meeting, the cabinet also decided to institute one central company to provide utilities for the people. Discussions were also held on an additional governmental policy designed to resolve the challenges faced in meeting the fundamental needs of smaller populations, under the government’s policy to promote regional agglomeration of rural populaces.
