At today’s cabinet meeting, discussions were held on feasible ways to carry out the second phase of the land reclamation and development project for Hulhumale.

Following deliberations on a paper presented by the Ministry of Housing and Environment, the cabinet decided to begin at the soonest, the paperwork and technical work required to continue the project.

The Hulhumale development project was initiated by the government on 16 October 1997, as part of the Male’ decongestion plan, and meet the people’s housing needs, especially those residing in the Male’ region.

Further, discussions were held on a paper also presented by the Ministry of Housing and Environment, regarding the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The cabinet noted that it was indeed an important step for the Maldives to take part in the convention, as the country’s economy largely depended on trade of different species.
