President Mohamed Waheed has reaffirmed government’s commitment to the safety and security of all citizens.
Addressing the people of Komandoo on Saturday, the President said he would “remain steadfast in fulfilling the responsibilities under the Constitution and under the mandate given by people’s votes”.
Noting that the change of power on 7 February was sudden, the President spoke on the political context that led to the change.
There were a number of issues that had concerned the people and that ultimately led to public discontent, he explained.
The President noted that people were worried about certain actions of former President Nasheed, especially his insults towards Islam. He also added that past few years saw setbacks against the efforts towards democratisation and basic liberties and rights.
“I assure you that I will not do anything that violates the tenets of Islam, the country’s Constitution and laws,” he said.
In his speech, President Waheed praised the people of Komandoo for their hard work, love for the island, the harmony that existed and their hospitality. Noting that the people themselves had already undertaken many developmental projects, the President said he was confident that with some assistance from the State, the Komandoo people would do the rest of the work.
