President Dr Mohamed Waheed has announced that his government will have a special ministry for addressing issues related to women, children and human rights. He made this statement while addressing the people of Funadhoo of Shaviyani atoll in his ongoing trip to the atoll.
The President’s speech focused on the significance of marking International Women’s Day. President Waheed stressed the importance of women’s participation in every aspect of life for the overall development of the country. The country could only progress with the full participation of every member of the society, he said.
In his speech, the President acknowledged that a number of women were unpaid for their work in cleaning or the general upkeep of their islands. He promised his government would pay all the wages owed to such women.
Speaking on the political situation, President Waheed questioned the intention of a few people who have denounced all state institutions such as the judiciary, parliament, laws and regulations. He said only the law of the jungle would exist if those institutions did not exist.
He said the government would never allow such a day in the Maldives, adding that the majority of the people did not wish to see such chaos in the country.
