President Mohamed Nasheed has returned the Thalassaemia Control Bill to the People’s Majlis for reconsideration.

The Bill was passed by the People’s Majlis on 27 December 2011.

In the letter sent to the Speaker of the Parliament Abdulla Shahid, the President noted the various concerns highlighted by the Attorney General, in his legal advice on this bill. He also requested the Speaker of the Parliament for further review and modification of the bill, with consideration of the points noted by the Attorney General.

The President further stated that under health services provided in accordance with clause 15/2011 of the National Social-Health Insurance Scheme Act, a more comprehensive legislation should be encompassed for treatment of children affected with thalassaemia.
