The Ambassador of Finland to the Maldives Ms Terhi Hakala has today presented her Letter of Credentials to President Mohamed Nasheed, at a ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office.

After the presentation, the President and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways of further strengthening these relations.

Speaking on the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen democracy, the President said that democracy was still very tender in the Maldives and that there were many challenges in this endeavour.

He added that climate change was a global challenge and that the Maldives and Finland could work together to combat this problem.

The President also thanked Finland for its support to the Maldives campaign to secure a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Hakala said that she was impressed by the underwater cabinet meeting held in the Maldives last Saturday and that the event “was a wake-up call for many people”.

She further said that climate change was a mutual concern and that Finland could provide expertise to the Maldives in this area.
