President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the exchange of information from one side to the other, and from one place to another is of extreme importance to national development.

The President made this remark at the Dhiraagu High-Speed Network Rollout held in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi. The project is undertaken by Dhiraagu, in collaboration with Japan’s NEC to lay out a fibre optic submarine cable network from North to South across the Maldives.

In his speech, the President said that the project would bring about significant development to the Maldives, making the conveyance of information easier, better and speedier in the future.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Nasheed noted that the slow speed of broadband internet in the country prevents the full accessibility to telecommunication across the Maldives.

The fibre optic submarine cable network system will be laid from North to South across the entire Maldives. The system would transform the landscape of telecommunication in the country in areas such as telemedicine, e-health, e-government, education and business through modern technology.

The project was launched by President Mohamed Nasheed, Minister of Transport and Communication Adil Saleem, and senior officials of Dhiraagu by pulling the submarine cable to shore.
