United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay has today paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, President Nasheed spoke on the many human rights issues faced in the Maldives and the steps being taken by the government to tackle the problems. The President noted that assistance from the international community was much needed in combating the human rights issues in the country.

The Human Rights High Commissioner commended the President for the Maldives’ role in the international arena, on the advancement of human rights. She also praised the initiative for SAARC human rights mechanism at the SAARC Summit.
