The cabinet has today decided to establish a special unit at the Ministry of Education, to provide higher education opportunities for 1000 students each year. The decision was made after deliberating on the compilation of a government policy, to provide financial assistance for students pursuing higher education.

Following discussions at today’s meeting, the cabinet also appointed a committee to coordinate and oversee the performance of the unit. Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed will head the committee of which other members include Minister of Education Sifa Mohamed, Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports Uz. Hassan Latheef, and Minister of Economic Development Mahmood Razee.

At today’s meeting, members of the cabinet noted that despite the Maldives’ graduation from Least Developed Country status to Middle-Income Country status, the number of Maldivian youth going for higher studies or other training programmes were significantly low when compared to other countries of Middle-Income status. Members also spoke on the importance of facilitating for students, a sustainable and efficient means of acquiring a higher education.
