Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said the rise in events held to amplify public awareness on child abuse show the high levels of concerns voiced by Maldivians to safeguard our children. The Vice President made this statement at a children’s festival held to mark “World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse: Every Neglect is an Abuse” at Artificial Beach this evening.

The event was organized by the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies in affiliation with Child Abuse Prevention Society (CAPS).

During his speech the Vice President stated that child abuse includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as neglect; and in order to create a healthy environment, parents must be supportive and not over-critical of their children.

In his speech, the Vice President highlighted on the vitality of the role of a parent to provide a good upbringing, as children today are often exposed to a number of influences from the outside world, inclusive of television, radio and other media.

In conclusion, the Vice President encouraged all governments and communities and society organizations to concentrate on this difficult problem and to promote the just enactment of laws and regulations that promote the safeguard of our children
