Reflecting on yesterday’s demonstrations held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Mohamed Nasheed has said that all independent government agencies should regard this as an opportunity to change for better governance.

The President made this statement in his radio address delivered this morning, pointing out that members of MDP were expressing their disapproval towards the judiciary of the country, in yesterday’s protests. Speaking in this regard, the President urged the judiciary, the legislature and the executive bodies to carry out their activities according to democratic values.

In today’s Radio Address, President Nasheed highlighted the opening of “Hubasaana 2011” in Addu City yesterday, a cultural festival exhibiting Maldivian handicraft. The President noted that this was the first of three festivals, and that the second will be held from the 8th to 10th of November at the SAARC Convention Centre, especially for the SAARC delegates. The third festival is planned to be held in Hanimaadhoo from the 1st to 3rd of December this year.

Further, Presidents Nasheed said that the main purpose of holding a cultural festival was to promote Maldivian craft skills, to uphold and encourage Maldivian customs and traditions, and to facilitate good market opportunities for the small and medium enterprises in the country. The President also noted that this festival would provide the opportunity for a good market in the tourism industry.
