President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the sustainable development of aquaculture and mari-culture projects in the Maldives will ensure the economic growth and ensure economic viability of the society.
The President made this statement during the signing ceremony for development of a sea cucumber project between Masmeeru Investments and Noonu Ken’dhikulhudhoo this afternoon.
In his speech, President Nasheed noted that the government plans to open the fisheries sector, especially the aquaculture and mari-culture fisheries, for investors.
President Nasheed further highlighted the importance of utilizing the commercial benefits of marine resources available in the Maldives, in order to achieve other means of income other than revenues gained from the tourism industry. The President further spoke on addressing fiscal and environmental issues and utilizing expertise advice on environmental concerns to sustain the economic viability of this project.
In his speech, President Nasheed noted that there were many challenges in developing the fisheries sector and spoke on the importance of finding investments and expertise on environmental concerns in beginning such a project. Following his speech, President Nasheed waded into the area where sea cucumber harvesting is carried out.
