President Mohamed Nasheed has today inaugurated the Coconut Planting Programme, as part of the World Food Day celebrations being held in Noonu Ken’dhikulhudhoo.
At the ceremony held this morning, the President noted the need to capitalize on the natural and man-made resources available in the country, to fulfill our daily requirements, highlighting the versatility of the coconut palm and its different parts.
In his speech, President Nasheed mentioned the lack of attention given to our resources, pointing out that we were indeed being wasteful by neglecting the potential use of various products of the palm tree.
Underlining the role of students in the Coconut Planting Programme inaugurated today, the President said that the programme would encourage the cultivation of the coconut palm, and in turn provide various means of income.
