Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said that conscience which guides development must come from the people, and therefore civil society plays a very important role in shaping the development of our country.

The Vice President made this statement to highlight on government and international efforts made to mitigate the impact of climate change to the Maldives.

In his keynote address delivered during a Report Release named “Energy and Environmental Security: A Cooperative Approach in South Asia, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed highlighted on the importance of fostering regional cooperation to combat the negative impacts of climate change.

The Report was prepared by the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) whose primary objective is to create awareness among South Asian countries in addressing regional challenges.

Stressing the importance of establishing a carbon neutral country, the Vice President spoke on working to make a concerted emission mitigation action, through mobilization of both financial and technical resources. The Vice President further spoke on climate change policies of this government and economic issues that hinder the progress of energy security.

In his speech the Vice President thanked Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks for undertaking the project and contributing towards the development of energy and environmental security of this country.

Other speakers in this conference include Director of Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) D. Suba Chandran and Director, Regional Programme SAARC at Konrad Adnauer Foundation Tomilslav Delinic.
