President Mohamed Nasheed has said that for SAARC to succeed in its works, what we need is greater focus and not a number of agreements or frameworks.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the “Consultative Meeting on Strengthening SAARC’s Institutional Mechanism” held this morning, the President said that all SAARC leaders must be able to work until an agreement is reached, though every decision does not need to be a unanimous agreement.

Highlighting the noble purpose of the founding of SAARC, President Nasheed noted the high aspirations held by the people for a better quality life. He also said that the people want their leaders to consult and deliberate on matters in delivering the good life they hope for.

The President underlined the government efforts to attain other means of national income without relying on import duties as a mainstream of government revenue, noting that the change was “not politically easy”.

Further, the President conveyed his hopes to develop better and stronger relations among SAARC countries, regarding this year’s SAARC Summit slogan “Building Bridges”.
