The cabinet has decided on the participation of Maldives in the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) of the United Nations Human Rights Council. It was decided after deliberations on the matter at today’s cabinet meeting.
At the meeting, members noted that the rights stated by the covenant were also granted by the constitution of the Maldives, and that in signing the Optional Protocol of the ICESCR, it demonstrates the importance given by the government, to the international guidelines, in protecting the rights of the people.
Members also decided to accommodate the celebratory activities of the Republic Day during the SAARC Summit, which is to be held on the 10th and 11th of November this year.
The Republic Day of the Maldives is marked on 11th November.
