Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kunio Takahashi has paid a farewell call on President Mohamed Nasheed today.
During the meeting at the President’s Office, the Japanese Ambassador expressed gratitude to the President and the government of the Maldives for the support and aid for the people of Japan in their time of need following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The President reiterated that Japan has continued to be one of the most important development partners of the Maldives. He expressed his appreciation for the immense contributions from Japan; for their continuous commitment and investments in the Maldives.
The President also underscored the importance of a more dynamic SAARC this year, on strengthening the SAARC Secretariat and stated that Japan is to be an Observer in the upcoming SAARC Summit.
The President also held discussions on collaborating with the Japanese at the Climate Change International Forum. He additionally highlighted on the Japanese aid provided for a solar renewable energy project that was launched in Male’ today.
The President further highlighted that this year’s SAARC Summit deliberations included a proposal where 2% of each country’s revenue shall be utilized to develop renewable and sustainable energy development programmes.
The Japanese Ambassador further stated that the Maldives would benefit and make socially and economically sustainable progress through regional cooperation efforts, such as the upcoming SAARC Summit.
