President Mohamed Nasheed has said the government is determined to establish the basic infrastructure and utilities that are necessary for the development of the country.
Speaking at the special meeting held at Fuahmulah today on “the Role of SAARC in the Development of Fuahmulah”, the President shared with the people, the programmes for the development of Fuvammulah, and work currently underway in the island to prepare for this year's SAARC Summit.
The President expressed his dismay at the lack of a proper sewerage system in the island, noting that these basic utilities should have been provided a long time ago. He said that he understood people’s demands for the essential services such as a sewerage system, clean water supply, better healthcare, education for their children, housing and job opportunities in the island.
Emphasising that the purpose of establishing seven utilities companies was to oversee the implementation of better water, sewerage and power supply in the country, the President commended Southern Utilities Company for their work.
At the special meeting held in Fuvahmulah this afternoon, President Nasheed announced the government's plan to establish a government-funded universal health insurance. He added that the entire Fuvahmulah and the country's population would soon be insured under the scheme. He also said the price of healthcare would be set at a rate feasible for the regional health service corporations.
