President Mohamed Nasheed has said that it is a government obligation to construct a bridge, connecting the islands of Male’ and Hulhumale’ to allow easy accessibility, improved transport and the collective development of the two islands. The President made this statement, following the presentation of documents of guarantee this evening, to all recipients of flats in Hulhumale’, under the “Veshi Fahi” Male’ de-congestion programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mohamed Nasheed said that he believed it was absolutely necessary to construct a bridge, as a ferry system is insufficient as a sole transport facility for the people.

In his remarks at the ceremony, President Nasheed explained that due to severe congestion, the construction works should be carried out at a swift and progressive pace.

President Nasheed continued that construction in Gulhifalhu is to begin next month, and 2500 flats are to be built under Phase 2 of Gulhifalhu development project.

“The government has made considerable progress in fulfilling its pledge to build housing units and provide affordable housing for the people,” said President Nasheed. Of the 10,000 flats awarded in Veshi fahi Male’ housing project, the construction of over 8,000 flats is currently underway.

Male’ City Councillor Mr. Adam Manik, director of the Veshi Fahi programme, gave the welcoming speech at this evening’s ceremony.
