President Mohamed Nasheed has inaugurated the establishment of ‘Dhivehi Language Academy’.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony held at the National Art Gallery last evening, President Nasheed said that Dhivehi Language Academy is a linguistic academy whose mission is to promote a reasoned inquiry into the nature, origins, and usage of Dhivehi language. The President added that its primary concern is to develop communications and correspondences, and preserve and promote the use of the national language, Dhivehi.
Following section 9/2011 of the National Language (Priority) Act, the President appointed 5 members to the Academy. The members appointed to the Academy were Nu-uma Abdul Raheem, G. Naifaru, Rafia Abdul Gadir M. Magumatheege, Mohamed Amir Ahmed, Husnuheenaage, Fares Maathodaa, Zeenath Ahmed Dhanbu Suthulige, Mahibadhoo and Ashraf Ali, Lilymaage, Ga.Nilandhoo.
President Nasheed noted that following careful observations, the appointment of the Members was based upon their efforts, skills and dedication to linguistics.
The President noted that studying all aspects relating to Dhivehi language, and its significance to the culture of the society is essential to the development of the Maldives.
Further, President Mohamed Nasheed urged Members of the Academy to be broad minded and open to adaptation of foreign concepts while dealing with the study of creation and evolution of Dhivehi language over a period of time in history.
