President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern about the recent imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi. The President’s statement reads as follows:

“I wish to express my grave concern about the recent imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi by the Myanmar authorities on the pretext that she violated her terms of detention. Her continued detention, along with thousands of other political prisoners, is an affront to the principles of democratic governance and norms of international behaviour. I strongly believe that the international community must be unanimous in taking all appropriate actions necessary to bring about her immediate and unconditional release, along with all other political prisoners, to ensure a free and fair election in 2010 that will bring stability and prosperity for the people of Myanmar.”
