President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with the Foreign and Commonwealth Representative for Climate Change John Ashton and British Deputy High Commissioner Mark Gooding.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, the President briefed on the countries energy policy and the government’s commitment to the carbon neutrality goal.

Speaking in this regard, the President informed the Foreign and Commonwealth Representative for Climate Change and British Deputy High Commissioner on new policies proposed by the government to introduce the use of advanced green technologies and environmentally friendly products.

The President expressed concern on the challenges of climate change and the predicament of the Maldives, which he stated as acute and immediate.He also stated that the Cabinet had decided to establish Renewable Energy Investment Office to come up with economic solutions to the country’s energy concerns and expedite implementation of these solutions.

At the meeting, the Foreign and Commonwealth Representative for Climate Change congratulated the government on its positive efforts to consolidate democracy and entrench pluralism.

Additionally, the British Deputy High Commissioner commended government efforts to ascertain a system of good democratic governance.

Further, the President and the attendees conversed on holding discussions at this year’s SAARC Summit to seek a legally binding framework on the issue of climate change.
