President Mohamed Nasheed has said the government aimed to list all public enterprises in stock exchange, as public limited companies.
He made the remarks speaking at the inauguration of Public Enterprises Monitoring Evaluation Board (PEMEB) and a workshop on the roles of PEMEB for heads of public enterprises.
The President said the government intended to relinquish government ownership of these enterprises and sell these shares to the public.
He said, as the first step towards privatizing these enterprises, the government, as one of its primary policies, has begun corporatizing commercially feasible activities of the government.
He underscored that offering shares of public enterprises would be second phase of the programme.
Speaking in this regard, the President underlined the need for a legal framework and qualified staff to successfully implement the government’s privatization programme.
Inauguration ceremony of the workshop held in Aarah this morning was officiated by Mohamed Umar Manik, Chairman of the Universal Group.

Objectives of the workshop include informing the public enterprises on the functions of PEMEB and sharing the government’s vision in corporatizing government activities.
