Representative of the World Health Organization to the Maldives Dr J. M. Luna has paid his farewell call on President Mohamed Nasheed today.
At the meeting held at The President's Office this morning, the President expressed his gratitude to Dr. Luna for his work as the WHO representative, in the development and expansion of public health services in the Maldives.
Continuing on, the President highlighted the role WHO has been playing in the growth and improvement of the health sector of the country, from 1940s onwards.
Noting how pleased he was to have been given the opportunity to work in the Maldives, Dr. Luna noted the improvements in public health and healthcare services in the Maldives. He stated that recent tests revealed a decline in new filarial cases in the Maldives and that presently, the transmission of the virus was very rare. He also pointed out that in the next two or three years Maldives could achieve the status of the first filarial-free country in the South Asia region.
The meeting was attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, Advisor on Political Affairs Mohamed Shihab, National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Haula Ahmed Didi.
