President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with the visiting delegation of members of the German Parliament.
At the meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon, the President discussed with German lawmakers on the Maldives’ political, social, economic and environmental issues as well as strengthening relations between the Maldives and Germany.
Speaking at the meeting, the President thanked the German government and the Chancellor for German assistance to the Maldives in both ushering and consolidating democracy.
Underlining human rights, and ensuring fundamental democratic rights of the people as the cornerstone of the democratic movement in the Maldives, he elaborated on the country’s efforts to promote human rights both locally and globally, especially through UN Human Rights Council.
Furthermore, he also said the Maldives’ democratic processes were open for observation from international community.
On climate change, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to its carbon neutral goal and said the Maldives continued to receive German assistance in efforts towards the goal.
The President also updated the members of German Parliament on the government’s policies to address youth unemployment and provide quality education in the country.
He thanked the members of the delegation for making a visit to the Maldives.
At the meeting, members of German Parliament praised the smooth democratic transition in the Maldives.
