President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Deputy Secretary General of Commonwealth Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office today, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to consolidate democracy.

The President said that increasing international engagements with the Maldives on democracy building, especially with the Commonwealth which has very specialized expertise, was necessary for the young democracy of the Maldives.

He expressed his appreciation for the continued engagement of the Commonwealth with the Maldives, and explored, with the Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, who is responsible for political affairs, human rights and youth, on ways of expending Commonwealth support for the Maldives’ democracy building efforts.

The President praised the Commonwealth’s initiative, with the Maldives parliament, to host a regional workshop on relationship between the government and the opposition in the Maldives.

At meeting the Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba spoke on deepening the culture of democracy and focusing on formulating a constructive relationship with the opposition to instill democracy.

She said the Commonwealth was ready to help the Maldives build a strong democratic culture.
