Speaking at the inauguration of the Maldives National University’s Council, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said the contribution of an educated and pro-active youth is essential to shaping a democratic Muslim society.

“It is important for University graduates to be well read and knowledgeable of the aspects of Islamic religion,” he said.

Vice President Dr. Waheed said that every graduate is required to complete compulsory basic courses including Islamic democracy, philosophy, and linguistics and literature irrespective of their chosen field of studies.

In his speech, the Vice President congratulated all members who were elected to the National University Council.

“The policies of the Maldives National University and the responsibilities of implementing legislation needed to uphold the framework of the University lies in the hands of the Council Members,” he added.

In this regard he asked the Council Members to strive and raise the bar for the Maldives National University to be in line with international standards.

“The Council Members should capacitate University students and broaden the educational horizons of the university graduates in order to materialize our vision for the future of the country.”

In addition, the Vice President also highlighted the importance of English language competency at the completion of their studies at the University. He noted that there should be an examination framework to establish graduates’ English language fluency.
