Speaking to inaugurate the Maldives Polytechnic’s staff retreat, ‘Maldives Polytechnic – Way Forward’, Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has called to focus on providing education and training to Maldivian youth to promote social stability and economic development of the country.

The Vice President said providing education and training to give proper skills for meaningful employment to youth who leave school every year was the key for the Maldivian youth to overcome the many social and economic challenges they faced.

Maldives Polytechnic’s staff retreat was held to validate the institution’s plan of action for 2011 to 2013.

Speaking at the meeting held at Bandos Island Resort and Spa today, the Vice President said, “Promoting the development of the youth is imperative as they denote the majority of the population.”

In this regard the Vice President highlighted President Mohamed Nasheed’s initiative to establish the Maldives Polytechnic as a vehicle for vocational education and skills in trades to Maldivian youth who were not eligible to enter a university or college. He said the establishment of Maldives Polytechnic stands testament to the government’s commitment to advance youth.

The Vice President said, “The government is prepared to aid all endeavors of learning institutions in achieving their responsibility to the youth of the country. The youth must be encouraged to step away from gang crimes, violence and be incorporated into the society in order to achieve peace and prosperity of the nation."
