President Mohamed Nasheed has appointed Mr Mohamed Aswan as the Commissioner General of Customs as per the Maldives Customs Act the President ratified today.
The President presented the Letter of Appointment as the Commissioner General to Mr Aswan at a ceremony held at the President’s Office this morning.
Addressing Mr Aswan after appointing him, the President said the reforms initiated by the government included major trade and economic reforms, especially focusing on fiscal reforms.
In this regard, the President noted the Maldives Customs Service was a primary institution in implementing the government’s fiscal policies. He added that having the duties of the Customs defined in an Act was an important step towards strengthening the Maldives Customs Services.
The President said he believed Mr Aswan to be most appropriate person as the Commissioner General of Customs.
Before the President presented the Letter of Appointment, Mr Aswan took the oath of Customs officers before the High Court Judge Yoosuf Hussain.
Mr Aswan previously held the post the Minister of State, Principal Collector of Customs.
