President Mohamed Nasheed has attended a special assembly held to commemorate Golden Jubilee of Iskandhar School.

Iskandhar School was established on 10 May 1961 as Hameediya Montessori School. In October 1970, the school’s name was changed to Naasiriyya Montessori School and to Iskandhar Montessori School in 1979, before the school adopted its present name, Iskandhar School, on 1 January 1980.

President Nasheed attended Iskandhar School, when it was known as Naasiriyya Motessori School.

Speaking at the assembly held this morning at Iskandhar School, the President reviewed the history of the school, sharing his fondest memories from his days at the school.

He said Naasiriyya Montessori School, founded by and named after Former President of the Maldives Ibrahim Nasir, the President paid tribute to President Nasir, highlighting his contribution to improve the standard of education in the Maldives.

In this regard he underscored that former President Nasir allocated up to 60 percent of the annual budget to the education sector.

Among the pioneering advancements in the education sector in the Maldives during President Nasir’s regime, the President noted the introduction English as the official medium of the school curriculum in the Maldives.

He said that the Naasiriyya Montessori School was founded by President Nasir as a vehicle to introduce English medium education to the Maldives.

The President urged the students to begin to reflect on the founders and the history of Iskandhar School.

The President, representing Iskandhar alumni, participated in various sporting activities held between past students, current students and teachers at the special assembly today.
