President Mohamed Nasheed has today met Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Toshiyuki Yamada.

At the meeting, held at the President’s Office, President Nasheed noted that the development of the remote islands of the Maldives was heavily reliant on telecommunications.

The President updated the Secretary-General on the ongoing telemedicine project to provide quality healthcare to the islands and the projects initiated by the government to enable the exchange of documents and government communications electronically.

In addition, the President spoke on using communications and information technology to increase the efficiency of public sector and inter-island transportation.

Speaking at the meeting the Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity praised the rapid progress achieved by the government to embrace the new advancements in information and telecommunication technologies and enhance the connectivity of schools, health centres and hospitals via telecommunication.

He further said that the ATP wished to conduct training programs to contribute to information sharing and public awareness on telecom development in the Maldives.

The meeting was also attended by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal and Minister of Transport and Communication Mohamed Adil Saleem.
