On the second day of the tour to Laamu Atoll, President Mohamed Nasheed, has visited Fonadhoo and Gan, and met the councils of the two islands.

Discussions at the meetings with two island councils centered on the ongoing and proposed development projects in the islands as well as the arrangements required to deliver government programmes and services through the councils.

In Fonadhoo, the government has contracted the construction of the island’s sewerage system to a Japanese company. The island is also selected to build 100 housing units under the government’s housing programme.

Among the completed projects in Fonadhoo include a 885 ft by 270 ft harbour, which was completed in 2010, and a youth and sports centre built in the island in 2009.

A major component of the government’s housing project is earmarked for Gan, including construction of 200 housing units. In addition, the government has completed the first stages of constructing the island’s sewerage system project.

In Gan, the government has already completed the construction of a 430 ft by 230 ft harbour in August 2010. The government has also commenced the service of a 50-bed hospital, newly constructed under the project to complete Gan Regional Hospital, with an emergency room, scan room, two operation theatres and a pharmacy.

The President also inspected the health, education and social services infrastructure including schools and health centers in both islands during the visit.

The President has returned to Male’ early this evening after concluding his tour of Laamu Atoll that he began on Wednesday.
