President Mohamed Nasheed, as part of the tour to Laamu Atoll, has visited Isdhoo and Maavah and met the Island Councils of both islands.

Meeting Isdhoo Island Council, President Nasheed urged the Isdhoo Island Council to work together with Kalhaidhoo Island Council to join the development of the two connected islands.

He asked the Isdhoo Council to work with Kalhaidhoo Council to formulate a common land use plan for both islands.

The President also discussed the government’s development programme in Isdhoo and sought the Council’s opinion on the programmes the Council could undertake to promote and economic and commercial activities in the island.

The government has constructed a 400 ft by 250 ft harbour in the island in 2010 and decided to build 150 housing units in Isdhoo under the government’s housing programme.

While in Isldhoo, the President visited and met the senior officials of Isdhoo School and Isdhoo Health Centre. Before departing from Isdhoo, the President also visited Kalhaidhoo and toured Kalhaidhoo School and power house.

Discussions at the meeting with Maavah Island Council generally focused on the government’s development programmes in the island.

In addition, the President urged the Council to resolve the dispute among some residents of Maavah following the government’s decision to handover the provision of electricity in the island to the regional utility company.

Maavah is selected to construct a harbour under the government’s public sector investment programme this year. The government has also opened the construction of the island’s sewerage system for tender. 50 housing units will also built in the island under the government’s housing programme.

During the visit the Maavah, the President also visited the health centre and the school.
