President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with Prime Minister of Bhutan Leonchen Jigmi Yoezer Thinley at the President’s Office.
At the meeting, President Nasheed and Prime Minister Thinley discussed the close relations that exist between the Maldives and Bhutan.
The President extended a warm welcome to the visiting Prime Minister to the Maldives on behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives. He also expressed his gratitude for warm Bhutanese hospitality to him and his delegation during their visit to Bhutan in 2010 to attend the 16th SAARC Summit held in Thimphu.
Prime Minister Thinley noted both countries shared many similarities and the hopes and aspirations of both peoples were the same. He further underscored that two countries were new democracies and there were much both countries could learn from each other’s experience in strengthening democracy.
Official talks between the governments of the Maldives and Bhutan were also held at the President’s Office today.
The talks were mainly focused on increasing bilateral cooperation and further strengthening the relations between both countries, especially in the areas of tourism and economic development.
Both governments also discussed the preparations for the SAARC Summit to be held in the Maldives later this year.
The President underlined that the SAARC Summit to be held in the Maldives would be first Summit to be held in Southern hemisphere, and the government was working to make it a successful and a memorable summit that result in concrete agreements for the development of the region.
Prime Minster Thinley said he was confident that the Maldives’ chairmanship of the regional organisation would be beneficial for both the organisation and South Asia region.
Prime Minister of Bhutan Jigmi Thinley is making the visit as the Chairman of the SAARC.
