Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has inaugurated the parental awareness programmes on preventing child abuse organized by Child Abuse Prevention Society (CAPS).
As part of the programme, CAPS, a local NGO working to prevent child abuse in the Maldives, is to hold a series of educational workshops and camps for parents, in collaboration with government authorities and other relevant local NGOs.
In his inaugural remarks at the official launch of the programme held at Aarah this afternoon, the Vice President expressed concern over the prevalence of child abuse in the Maldives.
Noting that legal framework, although basic, to stop child abuse was in place, he underscored that a positive relationships within the family and between parents and children were as important as legal system to prevent all forms of violence against children.
Therefore, the Vice President underlined the importance of parental education and awareness programmes, such as the programme by CAPS, in providing necessary skills for parents to help their children at different stages of growing up.
He also commended CAPS and other NGOs working to stop violence against children as well as to educate parents to create a safer environment for children to grow up.
CAPS held the first of the series of education camps today at Aarah. Today’s camp was facilitated by Juvenile Justice Unit, Society for Women against Drugs, and Maldives Police Service.
