President Mohamed Nasheed has attended the reception hosted by High Commissioner of Pakistan to the Maldives Akhtar Ali Sulehri to mark the 71st anniversary of Pakistan’s National Day.
In his address, at the reception held at Dharubaaruge yesterday, the President paid tribute to Mohammed Ali Jinah, the founder of Pakistan, noting his vision of establishing a tolerant and democratic society within Islamic values in relations with its immediate neighbours and the world at large.
However, the President said the region was “still facing a number of challenges for us to be able to realize those noble intentions.”
He said the South Asia had the capacity to overcome the differences amongst themselves.
“South Asia is very rapidly, economically developing and we must be able to distribute the fruits of these developments to the people,” he said.
He further said the SAARC Summit to be held in Addu City later this year would provide the opportunity to find “amicable solutions” to issues in South Asia region.
The President underscored that Pakistan could lead the Islamic world in many areas stating that “many other Islamic countries are just realizing the aspirations of Pakistani leaders 71 years ago.”
“Pakistan therefore stands in the forefront of being able to tell the rest of the Islamic world and show an example to them and bring governance that are accepted by the people and governance that can rule for the people,” he added.
Pakistan National Day is the 23rd of March.
