President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Siraj Shamsuddin today.
Discussions at the meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon, centered on the ADB funded development programmes in the Maldives, as well as increasing ADB’s assistance to the Maldives.
At the meeting, the President thanked the ADB for its long standing relationship and continued assistance to the Maldives, describing ADB as an important development partner of the Maldives.
He underscored the importance of ADB assistance to strengthen the newly introduced tourism goods and services taxation system, and ease the difficulties in conducting foreign currency transactions.
The President noted water, sewerage and road construction as the government’s priority development projects, and discussed with the Executive Director on the possibility of extending ADB support for these projects.
He also requested a greater participation from ADB in the upcoming SAARC Summit to be held in the Maldives.
Applauding the government’s economic and fiscal policy, ADB Executive Director Shamsuddin assured the President of continued ADB assistance to the Maldives.
