President Mohamed Nasheed today met with the newly elected members of Male’ City Council.
The first ever Male’ City councilors were sworn in yesterday, along with all the other city councilors, atoll councilors and island councilors elected in the February 5 local council elections.
At the meeting, the President congratulated the new councilors and said the government’s aim was to deliver all its programmes targeted for the development of Male’ City through Male’ City Council.
He said Male’ City being the most populous area in the country, more programmes were planned for Male’ City, and assured the councilors of full support and cooperation of the government in delivering these programmes.
The President also urged the councilors to opt for dialogue and consultation in making decisions regarding council programmes, and to keep records and follow all necessary procedures.
Noting that the country was going through unprecedented political and social transformations, and he requested all councilors to work for with the national and people’s progress as well as the thinking of the parties they represented in mind rather than for personal gain.
He said listening to political parties was important in making decisions about the affairs of the city, as political parties were the primary vehicle through which the people’s voices were heard in a democracy.
At the meeting, speaking on behalf of all the councilors, Mayor of Male’ City Adam Manik declared the Council’s support for the government policy, especially the government’s manifesto.
He also assured the President of an all inclusive and consultative decision process within the council to ensure smooth operation of the council and delivery of the government’s programmes for Male’ City.
