The Maldivian government appeals to leaders of Burma to respect calls from world leaders and unreservedly supports calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Maldivian government also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of more than 2300 political prisoners allegedly being held in austere and inhuman conditions.

Further, the Maldivian government views Aung Saan Suu Kyi’s recent arrest and charges of breaching the conditions of her detention, as a sham enacted to deprive her of contesting elections scheduled for May 2010.

The Maldivian government calls upon the international community to prevail over the leaders of Burma to hold free and fair elections and pave the way for democratic institutions, to enable the people of Burma to usher in a peaceful and prosperous future.
