The President calls upon all citizens to give paramount importance to follow through peacefully and with civility and uphold the rights of all political candidates in the interest of national harmony throughout the campaign for the upcoming local council elections.

 
A press statement issued by the President’s Office today said hindrances to various campaign activities of political parties was not supported by President Nasheed.
 
The statement said that the President believed the confrontations and civil discord that arose in Huvadhu Atoll Kaadehdhoo, Kolhumadulu Madifushi and Thimarafushi, while the leaders of main opposition were campaigning for February 5 elections were against the spirit of democracy.
 
The President urged all citizens to respect each others rights and their freedoms of assembly and expression while campaigning for the election.
 
He called on the leaders and members of political parties to prioritize national interest and civil unity, and avoid disruption of peaceful political gatherings, rallies and campaigns.
