President Mohamed Nasheed has visited Baarah of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, as part of his tour of Northern Atolls.

Meeting the people of Baarah, the President underscored that the government was working to utilize the island´s rich natural resources, including brackish water lakes, large lagoon, land and human resources.

He said the aquaculture and mariculture projects being developed to be conducted the island in collaboration with the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) would begin soon.

The President said it could transform the island on the back of its rich natural resources.

Further, outlining the island´s development programmes, the President said the building of the island´s sewerage system has been contracted to Works Corporation Limited and was expected to be completed by the end of the year.

He also revealed that funding was allocated in this year´s budget to construct a larger t-jetty to facilitate better use of the island´s harbour.

In his address to the people of Baarah this afternoon, the President highlighted the benefits of the government´s social security programme to the people of the island.

He said 245 residents of Baarah were insured under Madhana health insurance programme as part of its pledge to provide affordable healthcare, and 72 residents of the island continued to receive the monthly old age pension of Rf2000.

He said money injected into the island´s economy as social security payments played an important role in maintaining the island´s economy.

The President has arrived in Kulhulhuffushi of South Thiladhunmathi Atoll later this afternoon, after concluding his visit to Baarah. Before visiting Baarah, he also visited Kelaa of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll today.
