President Mohamed Nasheed yesterday visited and met with the people of Thaa Atoll Thimarafushi.

 
Meeting the people, last evening, the President stated that the government’s objective was to develop Thimarafushi, saying that the development of Thaa Atoll and the entire country depended on the development of Thimarafushi.
 
In his address in Thimarafushi, the President reiterated that no other country in the Muslim world granted more freedom to Islamic scholars than in the Maldives. Highlighting the government’ policy of granting full freedom to Islamic scholars, the President stated that the Islamic civilization took off during the golden age of Islamic history because the Islamic society was open and free.
 
Continuing on the topic of the progress of the Islamic world, the President said success of Bahrain’s bid to host 2022 World Cup was an achievement of the global Islamic community. Further, he stressed the importance of opening and broadening the outlook of the Islamic world in order for it to achieve progress.
 
Speaking on the government’s pledges, he underlined the government’s achievements in providing social security for the poorest and most vulnerable in the society.
 
In this regard, the President noted, under the government’s pledge to provide affordable healthcare for all, 431 citizens of Thimarafushi were insured by Madhana social health insurance programme.
 
In addition, he said a total of 147 residents of the island received the old age pension given to people above the age of 65.
 
Furthermore, the President revealed that as part of the government’s programme to upgrade the healthcare services, while increasing the access to these services, Thimarafushi Health Centre will be linked up with other hospitals in the country via telemedicine system.
 
During the visit to the island, President Nasheed inaugurated the sewerage system build in the island by the government while Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, who accompanied the President to the island, unveiled the new island office building built on the island yesterday.
 
While on the visit to the island, the President toured the land being reclaimed to build the island’s airport as well as for residential purposes.
 

The President has returned to Male’ last night after concluding his visit to Thimarafushi.
