Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that services required for children with special needs should be provided at the national level. He made the statement, speaking at the function to launch Malé Optical Company's ‘Listen’ clinic, which specialises in providing services for people with hearing disabilities. The function was held last evening at Maldives Centre for Social Education.

Addressing the function, Dr Waheed noted that there were a number of children with hearing disabilities in the Maldives, and they were not provided an adequate service. Stressing the importance of providing the services necessary for children with special needs, he said that the government would support all the efforts to provide better services for them.

Furthermore, the Vice President said that research in the area of children's learning abilities have expanded and the knowledge of how child’s brain works has increased.

He urged the parents to pay a special attention to assess their infants' motor and sensory abilities soon after birth.

Vice President Dr Waheed thanked Malé Optical Company for opening the clinic, and the Company's Director Mr Moosa Mohamed for his services.
