President Mohamed Nasheed has this afternoon inaugurated telemedicine service established at Thinadhoo Regional Hospital.
The telemedicine kiosk installed at Thinadhoo Regional Hospital was donated to the government by Dhiraagu, one of the largest telecommunication companies in the Maldives.
Speaking at Thinadhoo Regional Hospital after inaugurating the system, the President thanked Dhiraagu for their donation.
He said technologies such as telemedicine provided many opportunities for expansion of telecommunication services and the service had huge potential for growth in the Maldives.
The President urged all the telecommunication companies to recognize the business potential in the service and join the government to expand the service in other areas of the country.
Noting the difficulties in providing adequate healthcare services in the remotely scattered islands of the Maldives, the President said telemedicine would enable people in the islands to receive quality healthcare from doctors and hospitals all around the world.
The President said the government was preparing to commence telemedicine services in 34 islands within the next few months. These services will be set up with the assistance of Khalifa Foundation, Abu Dhabi.
