President Nasheed has sent a message of congratulations to the new President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma. President’s message reads as follows:

“On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Maldives and on my own behalf, I would like to extend our warm congratulations and good wishes to you on your inauguration as the new President of the Republic of South Africa. President Motlanthe had invited me to your inauguration ceremony; but, regrettably, I had to decline as we are having our first ever multiparty parliamentary elections today.
South Africa and the Maldives have shared friendly relations, and I look forward to further deepening them in the years ahead. As an emerging democracy ourselves, we in the Maldives convey our best wishes for the continued success of democracy in South Africa. Please also accept our best wishes for peace and prosperity of the people of South Africa.”
